The Canadian Gynecology Institute of Chinese Medicine (CGICM) is in partnership with the Canadian Branch of the Specialty Committee of Gynecology (CSCG), an organization that promotes learning and research in the area of women’s health though various modalities of Chinese medicine. This branch is one of many international branches that contribute to the Specialty Committee of Gynecology (SCG) – a subsidiary to the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS). CSCG is an active promoter of universal information exchange concerning Chinese medicine gynecology through its publication The Journal of Chinese Medicine Gynecology and Obstetrics. This publication includes English articles as well as English translations of the leading research articles from China and around the world. CSCG also provides courses to alternative healthcare practitioners looking to increase their knowledge base in Chinese medicine gynecology and assists the SCG in the organization of their international conferences. This reciprocating partnership between SCG and CSCG contributes to the international promotion of Chinese medicine gynecology information and the health of women all over the world.
CSCG is associated with two major associations:
- The World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS)
- The Specialty Committee of Gynecology (SCG)
The World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS)
The WFCMS is an international academic organization with its headquarters located in Beijing. It currently has 195 Chinese medicine societies in 57 countries and regions. The establishment of specialty committees has become one of WFCMS’s most important issues. Up to now, 31 specialty committees have already been registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs in China, one of which is the Specialty of Gynecology Committee. This is an active organization that is committed to the continuing education and transference of information in relation to gynecological studies in Chinese medicine.
WFCMS is devoted to promoting understanding and cooperation among the academic groups of Chinese medicine all over the world, and also increasing international academic exchange, improving qualifications for Chinese medicine, protecting and developing Chinese medicine, working to have Chinese medicine recognized as a mainstream medical system in different countries, promoting the exchange and cooperation of Chinese medicine and other medicines around the world and, therefore, making greater contributions to the health of mankind.
The main tasks of the organization are two-fold: first, to help create and publicize international standards relating to Chinese medicine, thereby, carrying out international certification and promoting the healthy development of Chinese medicine worldwide; and second, to conduct various academic activities for the purpose of promoting international exchange and cooperation among the societies of Chinese medicine. This is done through international conferences, the first of which was held in Beijing in 2004. It has since been held yearly all over the world, including Toronto in 2006 when it was hosted by the Canadian Society of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.
